ALLIANCE PUSHES "CYBER SECURITY" DAY

Source: Security Wire Digest

Posted on October 25, 2002

Hoping to remind computer users once again of the security risk for themselves and the nation's infrastructure, the National Cyber Security Alliance has designated October 27 as National Cyber Security Day.

Through its Stay Safe Online site and free publicity, the alliance, which formed in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, hopes to convince computer users to use the day--the end of daylight savings time -- to do basic computer security checks.

And the alliance has its work cut out for it. More than a year after Sept. 11, Americans are more aware than ever of the dangers of cyberterrorism. A survey conducted by the group found that 84 percent of home computer users are concerned about security, but more than three-fourths don't take basic precautions, such as updating antivirus software.

"There are still people who use their computers just for e-mail who think they're not at risk," says Anson Lee, product manager at Symantec's Norton antivirus division. "We're trying to let them know what can happen, to explain the risks so they can make better decisions."

Lee cites industry data showing that as many as 40 percent of all computers in use don't have up-to-date security features, such as virus scanning software and firewalls.

Other members of the alliance include Microsoft, the Software Business Alliance, the Federal Trade Commission, and about two dozen other companies, agencies and industry groups.
