RUDY GIULIANI, EY JOIN FORCES IN CYBER SECURITY

Source: Accounting Web

Posted on October 23, 2003

While acknowledging that he is no expert in computer security matters, former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's consulting firm has forged a partnership with Ernst & Young to help make the issue part of the discussion in America's corporate boardrooms.

According to the New York Times, the two firms will soon open "advanced security centers" in New York and Houston, made up of staff from Ernst & Young's computer security practice, which works to keep networks safe by hacking in from the outside to expose vulnerabilities.

Giuliani Partners sees cyberspace as a natural extension of its current corporate security practice. "This has now become a governance issue," Giuliani told the New York Times, and should be taken seriously by corporate executives. A security lapse that might have been prevented can hurt companies, possibly leaving executives and boards legally liable and reducing stock values, Giuliani said.

He also believes his firm's background in law enforcement, including his own stint as a federal prosecutor, can give the new partnership a perspective on how best to prosecute hackers.

Potential competitors told the Times they are not concerned about Giuliani's arrival in the cybersecurity business.

"What is he really bringing to the table as far as the security business part of it?" asked Chris Wysopal, the director of research and development for @stake, a company that also provides so-called white-hat hacking services, when interviewed by the Times. "I'm not too worried," he said. "When we say, `We talk business,' it isn't like going out to the golf course. It's showing real numbers, and having the data to back it up."
